Location

Situated within East Staffordshire, just 11 miles south of Derby and 30 miles north-west of Birmingham, Burton upon Trent is a richly-varied town with a population of 80,000.

The name Burton upon Trent is synonymous with brewing - a tradition dating back to the 13th century when Benedictine Monks reportedly discovered Burton’s water to be ideal for making beer.

Burton has great transport links to towns and cities across the UK ,and a regular train service to London St Pancras where you can connect easily with trains to mainland Europe.

Tamworth's community hospital is named after Sir Robert Peel, creator of the modern day police force, who lived at Drayton Manor in Tamworth - now home to a huge theme park and zoo.

The settlement of Tamworth dates back to Saxon times and its historic castle dominates the town centre which is also well-served by shops, restaurants and bars for all tastes.

Lichfield district has a population of some 98,000 with around 30,500 living in the city. Although only a few miles of green belt separate the city from Birmingham, Lichfield has kept a clear, unique identity and boasts a strong sense of community. Lichfield benefits from large areas of parkland which were restored and improved through a £3 million Heritage Lottery Fund project. The city was home to a number of famous people including Samuel Johnson - after whom the community hospital is named - and Erasmus Darwin and Anna Seward, whose names are commemorated in the names of the hospital's two wards.

Sport and leisure

There is a wealth of beautiful countryside within easy reach of Staffordshire, including the Derbyshire Peak District, Staffordshire’s Cannock Chase and the legendary forests of Nottinghamshire.

Alton Towers - Britain’s premier leisure park - is just half an hour away, and the Burton area is surrounded by some of the country’s finest stately homes including Shugborough - the home of Lord Lichfield - Sudbury Hall and Calke Abbey. Chatsworth House is also within easy reach.

The nearby market town of Uttoxeter is well known for its national hunt racecourse, while Tutbury’s ruined castle is a popular local landmark and hosts events throughout the year.

There is a thriving cultural scene within Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth with a wide variety of live entertainment, nightlife, arts and cinemas to suit all tastes.

Sport and recreational facilities abound in  the surrounding areas. As well as excellent sports and leisure amenities within the towns themselves, notable local attractions include Donington Park motor racing and The Belfry golf course (PGA headquarters and frequent host to the Ryder Cup).

Tamworth is home to the Snowdome - a great leisure facility including all-weather snow sport facilities. It also boasts a historic castle and the Drayton Manor leisure complex set in acres of gardens and parkland.
